Physiological Response of Cut Carnation Flowers after Cold Storage

Abstract

The effects of low temperature storage on the physiology and vase-life of cut carnation flowers (Dianthus caryophyllus L. cv. White Sim) were studied. Cut carnations treated with/ without silver thiosulfate (STS) were stored at 2¡É for 3 or 5 weeks. In general, carnations could be stored for 5 weeks if the flowers were pretreated with STS and wrapped with polyethylene film. STS diminished the loss of fresh weight of cut flowers and rotted flowers during storage, and also markedly decreased ethylene production of cut carnations after storage. Vase-life of bud flowers was longer than that of open flowers after cold storage. Bud flowers, however, often failed to open fully after cold storage. Therefore, bud carnations after cold storage were necessary to be held in appropriate preservative solution containing sucrose and biocide. Carnations from different growers did not respond equally after cold storage.
